Variations on S’Mores is not a new symphony like Beethoven’s15 Variations on "Eroica" in E-Flat Major, Op. 35 - Variation VI.
S’Mores is a beloved treat, dessert, and campfire food loved by all ages. I am thinking about campfires because we are only about 11 days away from Memorial Day weekend in the US. The unofficial opening of summer. The holiday Michiganders and Up North folks look forward to after a cold, snowy winter. Time to bust out of the indoors and smell the fresh, clean air of the pines, the flowering trees, and oh yes, the wood smoke that wafts up above the campfires. Time to go camping!
One special feature I observed when we moved to Michigan from Central Illinois was how much the Michiganders played outdoors, spent time outdoors, and appreciated the beauty of the woods and waters. Now I know why. Because winter is a very long season.
The outstanding spring with the abundant blossoms on the flowering trees, vibrant green grass, and the radiant colors of the spring flowers herald the arrival of summer!
So it’s time to celebrate that summer is rolling in. Included in every celebration around the campfire will be the building of S’Mores and the joy this simple treat brings to the taste buds for kids, parents, grandparents, great grandparents.
S'MORE RECIPE: In case you haven't experienced the joy of feeling chocolate and melted marshmallow sticking to your chin, here is the basic recipe for S'Mores. Sandwich a marshmallow, roasted over the campfire, and Hershey's chocolate bar between graham crackers. The hot marshmallow melts the chocolate to make a tasty treat. Mmmm, that first bite is a delicious, gooey experience. Hence the name S-Mores because you always want “some more” after the first one.
S’MORE VARIATIONS: There is no limit to the variations for S'mores. Let’s begin with my favorite variation, replacing the graham cracker with fudge-striped cookies. Try some or all of these for the filling—peanut butter, toasted coconut, caramel topping, Nutella, bacon, peanut butter and/or banana. I haven’t tried using Oreo cookies instead of graham crackers. If you are in a different part of the world, you can find ingredients to make S’Mores your way.
Be adventurous with this recipe. Please let me know how you build your S'mores in the comment section below.
Next week I will share recipes for cooking over the campfire. Just in time for Memorial Day weekend!! C ya’ then!
Thank you to Shared Appetite for some of the variations.
Sounds yummy!
